Sgt. William Harvey Carney

Sgt. William Harvey Carney (1840- 1908) of Company C, 54th mass. Colored Infantry,wasthe first black in the Civil War to earn the Medal of Honor. born in Norfork ,Va. , he was educated privtely and later settled in N. Bedford, Mass,where he became a seaman. Carney enlisted on Feb. 17, 1863, and earned his medal of honor 5 months later, at Fort wagner, S.C. whe the color bearer was wounded in the battle,Carey, also hurt, sprang forward and seized the flag before it slipped from the bearer's grasp, by doing so, he prevented the flag from touching the ground. The medal of Honor was not awarded until May 23rd 1900.
