Alex Haley


Alex Haley (Alexander Murray Palmer Haley (1921-92) became the 1st black to win a Pulitzer Prize for "Roots". Haley wrote the "Autobiography of Malcolm X",a best seller that outsold "Roots". Haley launched upon a 12yr venture to track the ancestry of his moyher's family. His search eventually took him to Gambia in W. Africa, where his fourth Great-grand-father, Kunte kinte, had been born. The book was translated in 30 languages. The A.B.C. Tv. network telecast of "Roots"in an 8episode miniseries was one of the most watched T.V. events ever.
