Dr. Brenda Watts Jones, 55, president of Atlanta Technical College, died Sunday of inflammatory breast cancer at Atlanta Medical Center.
Watts Jones led the college for 10 years, taking the former technical vocational school into a full-fledged technical college that offered regular two-year associate degrees. Under her watch, Atlanta Technical College expanded funding for scholarships and interest-free loans for students, and to help provide additional educational avenues for students who otherwise would not have had an opportunity to attend college.
Watts Jones' funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Cascade United Methodist Church in southwest Atlanta.
Funeral services are set for next Thursday for educator, historian, and psychologist, Dr. Asa Grant Hilliard, III.
Hilliard was the Fuller E. Callaway professor of urban education at Georgia State University, and had also served on the faculty of San Francisco State University. He was in Cairo, Egypt to deliver a keynote lecture at a conference for an organization he had helped found.
The cause of his death is attributed to complications from malaria.
He was in Egypt with his wife, former East Point mayor Patsy Jo Hilliard.
Services for Hilliard include his laying in state from 12 noon to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22, 2007, with acclamation of legacy and community services from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. that evening. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 23. All the services will be held at the Martin Luther King Jr. Chapel on the campus of Morehouse College.
