Frances Marion (Fanny) Jackson Coppin(1837-1913) was born in Washington, D.C. Born a slave, Coppin's freedom was bought by a devoted aunt, Sarah Orr. She became the second African-American woman in the U.S. to be awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree.
In addition to being a leader in education, Coppin was also politically active throughout her life
A girls' dorittory is named for Frances Marion JacksonCoppin at the Wilberforce Institute in Capetow, South Africa, and Coppin state College in Baltimore, Maryland, is named for her as well.
