William Henry Hastie (1904-1976) was born in Knoxville, Tennesse.
Dr. William Hastie was one of the bright young African- Americans who achieved high visability as a race relations advisors to the Roosevelt administration.
On May 7, 1946, Hastie was inauggurated as the first African-American governor of the Virgin Islands.
