Excluding Blacks from the voting process had beena tradition in some parts of the U.S. Fannie lou Hamer helped to change that.

in 1962, she began organizing Black voter registrion drives throughout her state. She also helped found the

Mississippi Freedom democratic Party which , in 1976, successfully intergrated the regular state delagation to the national convention.
