Marion Anderson was born in 1902. She was an american contralto who was considered by many to be one of the greatest ever,gained her first public renown in 1925 when she appeared as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic
Her 1939 concert at the Lincoln Memorial was a signal event in the national consciousness, transforming an ugly racial incident into a mass affirmation of human dignity and equality.
