While Joe Louis undermined Nazi race propaganda in one magnicent week in August 1936, Jesse Owens left Adolf Hitler's racial philosophy in tatters. While competing in the Berling Olympics , with Hitler himself watching, Owens won no fewer than four gold medals, for the 100 -meter dash, the long jump, the 200-meter dash, and the 400 meter relay, shattering the Olympic on each occasion. Nearly 40 years passed before President Gerald Ford awarded Owens the Presidential Medal of Freedom, The Nation's highest civilian Award.
