Canada Lee

May 3rd,this date marks the birth of Canada Lee in 1907. He was an African-Americn and the only leading black actors of the 1940's and 1950's.
His film credits includes Alfred Hitchcock's "lifeboat" and Robert Rosen"s "Body and Soul". He was known for his dignified presence, a rare image for black screen actors of that time. Lionel Canegata(his name at birth) was from Harlem N. Y. He was the boyhood friend of future congressional resentative Adam Clayton Powell.
Lee's acting career began by accident. While at a YMCA to appy for a job as a laborer, Lee stumbled upon an auditionin progress and was invited to audition. He earned a supporting role in Frank Wilson's 1934 production of "Brother Moses",which played to a crowd of ten thousand in Central Park. Lee, who recieved favorable reviews, settled on acting as a new career.
