Not to be confused with his grandfather El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, better known as Malcolm X.
Malcolm Lateef Shabazz (born October 8, 1984) is the only child of Qubilah Muhammad and first grandchild of Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz. He was born in Paris, France. Shabazz's father is a Francophone Algerian whom he has never met.
On 1 June 1997, Malcolm, then 12 and living with his grandmother Betty Shabazz at the time, set fire to her Westchester County, New York apartment. Betty Shabazz suffered burns over 80 percent of her body and remained in intensive care for three weeks, until she died on 23 June, 1997. Malcolm was later sentenced to eighteen months in juvenile detention for manslaughter and held at a youth facility in Valhalla, New York
