Barney Ford (1824-1902 )was born a slave in Virginia and at age of 18 was hired out as a waiter on a Mississippi steamboat. he escaped and with the help of the underground Railroad he became acquainted with Henry Wagner. Both men taught themselves to read and write.
In 1860, Ford headed west to Colorado in seach of gold .
Today ,the hill in Breckenridge where the first train chugged into view is still named Barney Ford Hill.
To his credit, numerous books and articles have been published about the life of this remarkable pioneer.
