Betty Carter was born on ay 16, 1930, in Flin t, Mich; and she died on September 26 1998 in N.Y. She was a African- American jazz singer with integrating bebop into swing jazz style. She received a grammy Award in 1997. Newsday described her as the "best jazz singer alive"; the same year, she was awarded the National Medal of Arts by Bill Clinton.
