The most noted black explorer was Estevanico (Esteban), a Moroccan. He was a member of the ill-fated Narvaez expedition that left spain in 1527 to explore the western coast of the gulf of Mexico.
Frir Marcos sent Estevanico ahead and the black scout soon discovered Arizona and New Mexico. THe Zuni Indians of the Cibola then killed Estevanico and the rest of the party retreated.
